Warhawks shoot 60 percent from the floor in win over Tigerhawks

COLFAX — North Mahaska showed why its going to be one of the top teams in Class 1A this season.

The Warhawks brought back a large majority of players from last year’s state qualifying team and cruised past Colfax-Mingo’s boys’ basketball team on Tuesday.

North Mahaska shot 60 percent from the floor and used dominant first and third quarters to dispatch the Tigerhawks 70-34 in the South Iowa Cedar League opener for both squads.

The Warhawks led 16-7 after the first and outscored the Tigerhawks 24-11 in the third.

Cael Bracewell put in 15 points, grabbed four rebounds and swiped two steals to lead Colfax-Mingo, while Harrison Rhone added 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Carter Gibson registered five rebounds and two steals, Trey Hockemeier collected two boards and three assists and Brandon Kite and Elias Hostetter had three and two rebounds, respectively.

The Tigerhawks (0-2 overall, 0-1 in the SICL) shot 23.4 percent from the floor, made 8-of-24 from 3-point range and committed 24 turnovers.

North Mahaska (1-0, 1-0) got 17 points from Lane Harmon and Nash Smith. Harmon added six rebounds and Smith dished out six assists, while Nolan Andersen chipped in 14 points and Braden Steel finished with eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
