URBANDALE — Newton’s volleyball team claimed its first win since the squad’s opening tournament on Thursday at the Des Moines Christian tournament.
The Cardinals went 1-3 on the day but swept Southeast Warren to end a long losing skid. The losses came to Class 3A No. 1 Des Moines Christian, Knoxville and Pella Christian.
Newton downed Southeast Warren 21-6, 21-15. Host Des Moines Christian and Knoxville defeated the Cardinals 21-12, 21-15 and Pella Christian handed Newton a 21-11, 21-17 defeat.
Against Southeast Warren (13-9), Kadance Ahn led the Cardinals with seven kills and four digs. Delaney Woollums tallied six kills, Macy Lampe finished with eight assists and two digs and Emily Wermager collected seven assists and three digs.
Hailey Sumpter was 11-of-11 in serves with six aces and she also put down three kills. Chloe Rorabaugh registered two blocks and Chloe Swank chipped in two digs.
The Cardinals (4-11) were 36-of-38 in serves with eight aces.
In the loss to Des Moines Christian (20-1), Lampe led the way with three kills, four digs and five assists. Wermager added five assists and three digs and Ahn had three kills and eight digs.
Woollums chipped in six digs, Swank had four digs and Rorabaugh put down two kills. The Cardinals were 24-of-26 in serves.
In the loss to Knoxville (9-5), which recently fell out of the 4A rankings, Woollums had four kills and seven digs to lead the Cardinals. Lampe registered three assists and eight digs, Ahn had three kills and four digs and Wermager dished out five assists.
Rorabaugh put down two kills, Haylie Ryan delivered two assists and Swank collected three digs. Newton was 21-of-23 in serves.
Ahn registered four kills and five digs in the loss to Pella Christian (6-8). Lampe had four assists and three digs, Woollums finished with two kills and two digs, Wermager dished out four assists and Swank served up two aces. Addison White collected two digs.
The Cardinals were 26-of-28 in serves with four aces.
