Tigerhawks can’t hold leads against Panthers

COLFAX — On the night when Colfax-Mingo’s football team played its first regular-season game in its new stadium, Panorama rushed for 414 yards and spoiled the night for the Tigerhawks.

Ryan Cogil gained 304 yards on 34 carries and scored six touchdowns and the Panthers used a big third quarter to down Colfax-Mingo 57-33.

Colfax-Mingo led 14-6 after one quarter and scored a late touchdown in the second to go into halftime down 28-27. But Panorama (2-0) outscored the Tigerhawks 22-0 in the third to pull away.

Shane Hostetter threw for 364 yards and five scores in his varsity debut and Curtis Horras gained 206 yards and scored three TDs on five catches.

The Tigerhawks (0-1) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first.

Conner Wood picked off a pass in the red zone at one end of the field and Hostetter found Horras for a 73-yard TD strike at the other end to put the Tigerhawks in front.

Horras and Hostetter hooked up again on the Tigerhawks’ next possession, this time for a 77-yard touchdown.

The lead was short-lived though. Cogil scored on a 43-yard TD run to put the Panthers on the board and scored again early in the second to tie the game.

Wood set up the Tigerhawks’ next score with a big catch and run. Trey Hockemeier ended the drive with a 6-yard TD catch.

Cogil put the Panthers back in front with a 59-yard TD run just before halftime. The Tigerhawks closed the gap to 28-27 at the break, but the big third quarter by Panorama was too much to overcome.

The Panthers (2-0) outscored the Tigerhawks 7-6 in the fourth.

Panorama averaged 6.8 yards per rush and both teams threw two interceptions. Colfax-Mingo averaged 26 yards per completion.

Hostetter rushed for 22 yards. JT Berner gained 38 yards on three carries and Xavier Woods gained 33 yards on seven carries.

Hockemeier grab five catches for 85 yards and scored two touchdowns. Wood hauled in two passes for 42 yards and Cael Bracewell had a 35-yard catch before leaving the game with an injury in the second.

Brock Nichol finished with a career-high 14 tackles and four tackles for loss and Wood tallied nine tackles, two tackles for loss and two interceptions.

Horras added 6.5 tackles and recovered a fumble, Joe Earles registered 5.5 tackles and a sack and Kaden Dalton had six tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Hostetter and Ben Keeney each registered 4.5 tackles and Donovan Baucom collected 2.5 tackles for loss.
