PCM baseball sweeps Nevada, downs Albia

Slow start plagues Mustangs in loss to Saydel

PRAIRIE CITY — Two wins over Nevada on June 13 kept PCM’s baseball team in the upper half of the Heart of Iowa Conference standings.

The Mustangs finished off a suspended game and then swept the Cubs in the regularly-scheduled matchup. PCM downed Nevada 16-6 in six innings in the opener and then defeated the Cubs 9-5 in the nightcap.

PCM collected 25 hits in the doubleheader sweep. The Mustangs overcame nine errors in two games. Nevada committed 15 errors though.

In the opener, PCM fell behind 5-2 after two innings but then plated three in the third, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game early.

Easton Webb and Gabe Hobbs each had three of the team’s 14 hits. Hobbs added three runs and two steals and Webb doubled and finished with two runs and one RBI.

Nick Farver registered two hits, one double, three runs, two RBIs and one walk. Gavin Fenton and Kaleb DeVries each had two hits, Fenton scored one run and DeVries stole one base.

Jacob Wendt finished with one hit, three runs, two RBIs, one walk and one steal, Zeb Padget added two RBIs, one walk and one hit by pitch and Carson Hansen scored three runs.

Trigg Steenhoek tallied one hit and one run, Will Owens collected one RBI and stole one base and Trenner Van Dyke was hit by a pitch and had one RBI.

Van Dyke (2-0) also earned the win on the mound. He allowed one unearned run on four hits in four innings and struck out four.

Webb tossed two innings and surrendered five runs — one earned — on three hits, struck out two and walked one.

Nevada (10-9, 4-5) registered nine hits and committed seven errors.

PCM grabbed an early lead in the nightcap with a three-run first. Nevada answered with three in the third and then went in front with one run each in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Mustangs rallied with one in the fifth and five in the sixth to win 9-5. They finished with 11 hits and four errors.

Steenhoek, Farver, Wendt and Webb had two hits each. Farver scored two runs and walked twice, Steenhoek scored two runs, walked once and stole one base and Webb tallied four RBIs and scored one run. Wendt doubled and scored two runs.

Padget tripled and registered three RBIs, Fenton had one hit and one walk and Durant Van Dyke tallied one hit and one run.

DeVries and Adrien Robbins each walked once, Hansen scored one run and Shay Burns stole one base.

PCM used three pitchers to get through the HOIC contest.

Webb started the game and pitched four innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, struck out one and hit one batter.

Padget (3-0) earned the win after surrendering one unearned run and one hit and struck out three in two innings. Durant Van Dyke struck out two and allowed no runs and no hits in one inning.

PCM 3, Albia 2

PRAIRIE CITY — Padget tossed a complete game, Webb registered two hits and Fenton drove in two runs during PCM’s 3-2 non-conference win over Albia on June 16.

The Mustangs scored two runs in the first and led 2-0 through four innings. Albia (7-10) plated a pair in the fifth to tie it, but PCM won the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

The home team won the game with just four hits. Webb had two of those hits and the others came from Steenhoek and DeVries.

Farver tallied two RBIs, Steenhoek collected one hit and one RBI and Fenton scored one run and stole one base.

Durant Van Dyke walked once and scored one run and Padget was hit by a pitch and scored one run.

Padget’s complete game included four strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs on four hits and hit one batter in seven innings.

Albia registered five hits and Jackson Pence hit a two-run home run to lead the Blue Demons.

Saydel 4, PCM 2

DES MOINES — Saydel earned the season series split following a 4-2 home win over PCM during a HOIC matchup on June 15.

The Mustangs couldn’t overcome a slow start as Saydel led 3-1 after four. They lost despite out-hitting the Eagles 5-4.

Farver led PCM with two hits, one run, one walk and one steal. Fenton, Wendt and Hobbs tallied the other hits.

Fenton chipped in one RBI and walked once, Wendt doubled and Robbins walked twice and scored one run.

Webb added an RBI and Owens walked once.

Durant Van Dyke took the loss on the mound after allowing four earned runs on five hits. He struck out six, walked three and hit one batter in five innings.

Farver pitched one inning and surrendered no runs and one hit. He struck out one, walked one and hit one.

Judd Roberts earned the pitching win after tossing seven innings for Saydel (10-11, 4-4). He allowed two earned runs on six hits and struck out six while walking five.
