Baird guides PCM girls track to fourth at HOIC meet

Mustangs dominate hurdles events

STORY CITY — Delaney Baird scored 23.5 of the 99 points PCM’s girls track and field team scored at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet on Thursday.

Baird was part of all three of the Mustangs’ wins and PCM registered seven top-three finishes.

Host Roland-Story won the team championship with 147 points and West Marshall (133) and South Hamilton (122.5) also scored more than 100 points.

PCM (99) and Greene County (86) completed the top five and Nevada (78.5), Perry (54) and Saydel (6) finalized the eight-team field.

Baird won the 100- and 400-meter hurdles and was part of the winning shuttle hurdle relay team.

Baird won the 100 hurdles in a career-best time of 16.62 seconds and Chelsea Bird was the runner-up in 16.98.

The two seniors teamed up with Belle Hudnut and Kate McClellan to win the shuttle hurdle relay in 1 minute, 11.39 seconds.

Baird won the 400 hurdles in a career-best 1:09.22 and Addison Steenhoek finished fifth in 1:17.32.

The next best finisher was Rylee Gallaher. She was second in the shot put with a career-best throw of 35 feet, 3 inches and took sixth in the discus with a heave of 85-0.

MaKayla True finished third in the 3,000 with a career-best time of 12:46.39.

Tiffani Koonce was third in the 1,500 in a season-best 5:44.95 and True took fifth in a career-best 5:54.91.

Ryan Bennett sprinted to fifth in the 100 with a time of 14.17. Ayla Barrett and Laura Tedeschini tied for sixth in the high jump with leaps of 4-4.
