Experienced Indians shut out Newton boys tennis

Valtman pushes singles match to three sets, teams with Baumgartner for competitive doubles match

INDIANOLA — Most of the roster for Newton’s boys tennis team is brand new to the varsity level.

Nine of Indianola’s top 10 players are seniors.

The Indians had the experience on the Cardinals and it showed in the 11-0 home win over Newton during Little Hawkeye Conference play on Tuesday.

“Indianola has a lot of experience,” Newton boys head tennis coach Jared Gerber said. “We continue to show improvement. Many of the scores don’t show how close we played.

“Many games went to deuce, and we couldn’t win those points. If a few points go the other direction, it’s a much different score.”

Ten of Indianola’s 11 wins came in straight sets. John Valtman lost his No. 2 singles match 7-6, 1-6, 3-10.

Blake Baumgartner also played well at No. 1 singles but lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

Valtman and Baumgartner teamed up for No. 1 doubles and the Cardinal duo lost 6-4, 6-3.

“John and Blake both had good days and seem to be finding a better rhythm and pace for their games,” Gerber said.
