The newest member of the Newton girls bowling team’s varsity squad led the Cardinals to a win over Oskaloosa on Saturday.
Freshman Navaeh Bown stole the spotlight on Senior Day as her career-best series led Newton to a 2,383-2,049 win over the Indians at Cardinal Lanes.
Three girls on the Cardinals squad posted either career-best or season-best series for the day. The Newton boys were defeated 2,557-2,240 by Oskaloosa.
“The girls had another good run today,” Newton bowling coach Christie Hughes said. “Navaeh Bown rolled an impressive series, hanging right there with Bailey Hansen.”
Newton’s girls (6-1) had the top four individual series and six of the top eight in all.
Bown rolled a career-best 363 series after individual games of 160 and a career-best 203.
Hansen rolled a 361 series to place second. She had individual games of 193 and 168. Beka Weithers (334 series), Kaitlyn Gifford (312), Libbie Keith (271) and Genessa Slings (265) rounded out the varsity roster.
Weithers had individual games of 142 and 192 and finished third. Gifford’s career-best 312 series included individual games of 152 and 160. Keith’s individual games were 114 and 157 and Slings rolled games of 146 and 119.
Oskaloosa’s top bowler was Kaylee Haugen, who placed fifth overall with a 304 series. The Indians are now 3-3 on the season.
Newton’s girls led 1,641 to 1,297 after the first round. Oskaloosa was better in the Baker games by 10 pins but the Cardinals’ early advantage was too much to overcome.
Bella Johnson led the Newton girls’ JV with a 251 series.
The Newton boys were led by Austin Kennedy, who finished third with a 340 series. He had individual games of 168 and 172, which matched a career-high.
“Austin Kennedy is working hard on the lanes and is proving to be quite an asset to the team,” Hughes said.
The Cardinal boys (304) trailed Oskaloosa (3-2) 1,694-1,514 before the Baker games. The Indians outscored Newton 863 to 726 in the Bakers.
David Holmes was just three pins back of Kennedy with a 337 series. He rolled individual games of 167 and 170. The rest of the boys’ varsity squad included Logan Bown (292 series), Sebastian King (286), Owen Guldberg (259) and Dallas King (258).
Holmes was fourth overall after rolling individual games of 167 and 170. Logan Bown was sixth with a 149 and 143 and Sebastian King rolled 173 and 113 to finish seventh.
Guldberg’s single games were 132 and 127 and Dallas King rolled games of 124 and 134.
Oskaloosa’s Trey VanWyk had the top score of the day with a 480 series. He had single games of 201 and 279. Zach Fee was second with a 370 series.
Tamion Adams and Landon Gooden led the Newton boys JV1 team with a 339 and 307 series, respectively. Adams was brought up to the varsity for the Baker games.
Tyler Padgett (283) and Lance Banwell (272) also rolled solid series. Nathan Hauber led the Newton boys JV2 squad with a 254 series.
“We didn’t quite get the pin fall for the boys varsity that we were hoping for,” Hughes said. “We’ll continue to work on it.”
Six seniors were recognized before the meet. That group included Dallas King, Evan Benac and Alex Allspach from the boys’ team and Gifford, Zoie Danks and Hannah Schwickerath from the girls’ squad.
