Cupples leads six Newton girls at Boone tournament

Four Cardinals score top-three finishes at girls wrestling tournament

BOONE — For the second straight weekend, Stella Cupples claimed an individual championship at a girls wrestling tournament.

Cupples was one of six Cardinal grapplers to compete in the Boone girls tournament on Saturday and she again won both of her matches by pin.

Three other Cardinals were third or better at the tournament.

Cupples was 2-0 with pins at 39 and 20 seconds, respectively, in Bracket 36.

Emma Lopez-Garcia and Jessie Hutchinson both were second in their weight brackets.

Lopez-Garcia was 2-1 with two pins in Bracket 41 and Hutchinson was 2-1 with a pair of pins in Bracket 45. Her only loss came against Boone’s Anna Sondall, a ranked wrestler who placed at last year’s girls state tournament.

Ella Machin was the other top-three finisher. She was 1-3 with a pin in Bracket 46 and finished third overall.

Anastacia Franco and Claire Breuer also competed for Newton.
