Baxter basketball sweeps Meskwaki Settlement, girls stay unbeaten

Bolts remain undefeated in conference play after wins over Warriors

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — Baxter’s girls basketball team overcame a slow start to stay unbeaten on Tuesday night.

The Bolts trailed by two after one quarter and were tied at halftime but used a big third to pull away from Meskwaki Settlement School during a 54-45 road win in Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

Baxter won the third 20-8 and that was enough to stay unbeaten.

The Bolts (6-0 overall, 4-0 in the conference) won the game despite shooting 36 percent from the floor, 4-of-18 from 3-point range and 14-of-29 from the free-throw line.

Meskwaki Settlement started the season 5-0 but has lost three of its last four games. The Warriors are 6-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Lilie Vansice led the Bolts with 18 points and three rebounds.

Mandee Selover had a career night, finishing with 12 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

Elie Tuhn tallied 12 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals, Emie Tuhn registered three points, six rebounds and two assists and Ally Padget grabbed two rebounds and dished out three assists.

BOYS

Baxter 78, Meskwaki Settlement School 50

Baxter’s boys basketball team exercised some historic demons against Meskwaki Settlement School on Tuesday night.

The Bolts ended a six-game losing streak against the Warriors as Treyton Travis’ career night led Baxter to a 78-50 road win.

The Bolts led 14-10 after one but outscored Meskwaki 64-40 the rest of the way.

Travis put in a career-high 26 points and finished with three rebounds and five steals.

“The defense played tough and we turned it into points at the other end, but I love that we are spreading it out in the point department,” Baxter boys basketball coach Zach Hasselbrink said. “(Travis) had another strong game with some tough finishes at the rim. (Damman) puts us in great spots and (Scroggins) is tough to defend.”

Carson Scroggins added 17 points and eight rebounds, Cody Damman registered 12 points, five rebounds and two assists and Rory Heer collected nine points and four boards.

Nate McMinamen tallied five points and four rebounds and Cael Shepley put in four points, grabbed two boards and swiped three steals.

The Bolts (5-1, 4-0) stayed unbeaten in the conference after shooting 59 percent from the floor. They also hit 4-of-10 from 3-point range and connected on 10-of-14 from the foul line.

Meskwaki Settlement, the defending Iowa Star Conference South Division champions, dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in league play.

The Bolts’ closest game in conference play so far was the 22-point road win over Collins-Maxwell on Dec. 3.
