North Mahaska too much for Lynnville-Sully hoops

Warhawk boys make statement with impressive road win

SULLY — North Mahaska’s first quarter was too much for Lynnville-Sully’s girls basketball team to recover from.

The Class 1A No. 8 Warhawks led 26-5 after eight minutes and went on to win the South Iowa Cedar League game 74-35 on Friday night.

Lynnville-Sully committed 24 turnovers in the home loss. The Hawks were held to single-digit points in the fourth quarter, too.

“We did not have the intensity or focus we needed tonight to compete,” L-S girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We didn’t communicate very well on defense, which allowed open looks for them. Our execution on offense was not very sharp.”

Majesta Vos scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed four rebounds in the loss.

Reagan McFarland finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists, Greenlee Smock chipped in six points and three assists and Natalie Nikkel tallied six points and six boards. Aubree Arthur grabbed three rebounds.

The Hawks (5-3 overall, 2-2 in the SICL) shot 44 percent from the floor, 2-of-7 from 3-point range and 5-of-9 from the free-throw line.

After the first quarter, North Mahaska (4-1, 4-0) outscored L-S 48-30.

Kaitlyn VanDonselaar led all scorers with 24 points and Breckyn Schilling collected 17 points, eight assists and nine steals.

The Warhawks shot 46.6 percent from the floor and made 13-of-25 from 3-point range. They also shot 7-of-11 from the line.

BOYS

North Mahaska 77, Lynnville-Sully 45

North Mahaska’s boys basketball team did not get a single vote in the initial Associated Press rankings last week.

After the first four games of the season, that might be changing soon.

The Warhawks put together another dominating performance on Friday night and a 77-45 road win over Lynnville-Sully improved their record to 4-0 on the season.

A 23-10 first quarter got the game started for North Mahaska, which is 4-0 in SICL play. A 27-12 third quarter made sure Lynnville-Sully (3-2, 2-2) had no chance to rally.

“North Mahaska played well tonight. We weren’t able to get them out of rhythm offensively,” L-S boys basketball coach Nick Harthoorn said. “Hopefully we can learn from this game and be stronger moving forward.”

Conner Maston led the Hawks with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Kale Ehresman added six points and three boards, Ryan Annee chipped in four points and four rebounds and Corder Noun Harder collected three points, three rebounds and four assists.

Jacob Fogle scored five points, Mason Rodibaugh registered three points, two rebounds and two assists and Lucas Sieck collected three points and two rebounds.

Keegan DeWitt scored three points, Mathias Torres grabbed three rebounds and Josh Hardenbrook swiped two steals.

The Hawks, who are still down a pair of starters, shot just 33 percent from the floor, made 8-of-33 from long range and made 5-of-11 from the foul line. Lynnville-Sully was out-rebounded 39-24.

North Mahaska has outscored opponents 306-156 so far this season. It has scored at least 68 points in all four games and the 45 points scored by L-S was the most the Warhawks have allowed so far.

The Warhawks shot 50 percent from the floor, recorded 26 bench points and scored 15 points off turnovers.

Nash Smith had 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Ethan Huffman registered 18 points and six boards and Nolan Andersen had 13 points and six rebounds to lead North Mahaska.
