Newton wrestlers finish seventh at Cardinal Classic

Colin Sharp wins three times at Newton’s home tournament

Newton’s wrestling team entered eight grapplers into its home tournament on Saturday.

And the best finish the Cardinals could muster was fifth as Newton finished seventh in the seven-team field with 34 points.

Indianola won the team title with 222 points as the Indians entered 18 wrestlers in the tournament. Only 14 of those wrestlers could score points though.

The best finishers for Newton at the annual Cardinal Classic were Kaiden Rogers (106), Colin Sharp (160) and Kayden Noga (220), who all placed fifth in their respective weights.

Sharp was the only Cardinal wrestler to win more than one match. He was 3-2 on the day at 160. In pool-play action, Sharp won 7-2 but lost by fall and lost an 8-5 decision. He won twice in bracket action though, winning by fall and 7-0.

Rogers claimed his only win by fall at 106. Nathan Milburn and Wyatt Weter both were sixth at 170 and 182, respectively, and each grappler got their lone win in bracket action.

Dayton Petithory was 1-3 at 113. His lone win came in pool play and he finished sixth on the day.

Avery White was sixth at 138 and Conner McPartlin claimed eighth at 145.

Notes: Newton senior Brennan Amos is currently ranked 12th in Class 3A at 152 pounds. He also recently had hand surgery and is likely out until sometime in January. … The Cardinals return to action for a dual tournament hosted by Ankeny Centennial at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Ankeny.
