CHARITON — Dominating one quarter was enough for Colfax-Mingo’s boys basketball team during a road win over Chariton on Monday.
The Chargers outscored the Tigerhawks by 11 points in the second half but a big second quarter and first half pushed Colfax-Mingo to a win in its season opener.
A 22-5 surplus in the second frame helped the Tigerhawks overcome 29 turnovers during a 59-47 victory.
Three players scored in double-figures and Cael Bracewell nearly turned in a triple-double in his first varsity start.
The Tigerhawks shot 39 percent from the floor and were 13-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Brandon Kite’s career-high 14 points led the Tigerhawks. He also collected five rebounds and two steals.
Cael Bracewell finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists and Cole Bracewell added 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Joe Earles put in nine points and had two rebounds and three steals, Carter Gibson recorded eight points, six rebounds and three steals and Trey Hockemeier pulled down six boards.
Harrison Rhone also scored four points and Colton Lind grabbed three boards.
North Mahaska 86, Colfax-Mingo 34
NEW SHARON — The Tigerhawks couldn’t overcome 28 turnovers and a poor shooting night against North Mahaska during the team’s South Iowa Cedar League opener on Tuesday.
North Mahaska jumped out to an early lead and never looked back during an 86-34 home win.
Cole Bracewell had 12 points for C-M, while Cael Bracewell finished with six points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Earles tallied six points and three rebounds, Conner Wood chipped in three points and two rebounds, Lind had two rebounds and two assists and Kite grabbed five boards.
Hockemeier also had four rebounds, Konner Dalton grabbed two boards and Kaden Dalton handed out two assists.
The Tigerhawks shot 29 percent from the floor, were 6-of-23 from 3-point range and made 4-of-7 from the foul line.
