Madrid rallies past Colfax-Mingo football

MADRID — Colfax-Mingo’s football team could have eliminated Madrid from postseason consideration on Friday night.

Instead, the Tigers kept their playoff hopes alive and forced a tie for the fourth and final spot with the Tigerhawks during a 46-34 come-from-behind home win.

Colfax-Mingo led the Class A District 6 contest 28-25 at halftime, but Madrid outscored the Tigerhawks 21-6 in the second half.

The Tigerhawks gained 353 total yards but averaged just 3.2 yards per carry. Madrid rushed for 333 yards, threw for 205 and averaged nearly eight yards per carry.

Cole Bracewell led the Tigerhawks (2-5 overall, 2-3 in the district) with 282 passing yards, 63 rushing yards and five total touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions and had 8 1/2 tackles and a fumble recovery on defense.

Curtis Horras hauled in four catches for 107 yards and a career-best three scores, Cael Bracewell had a career-best nine catches for a career-high 62 yards and a TD and was 1-of-1 through the air for 4 yards and Justin Myers hauled in a pair of passes for 45 yards.

Colton Lind had five catches for 35 yards and Trey Hockemeier added four catches for 33 yards and also had a 30-yard kickoff return.

Defensively, Merritt McConeghey had a team-best 10 tackles to lead Colfax-Mingo. Myers and Joe Earles had 7 1/2 tackles each and Lind finished with five tackles and 1 1/2 tackles for loss.

The 46 points scored by Madrid were a season-high. Brady Leonard was 8-of-9 through the air for 205 yards and three touchdowns and he rushed for 194 yards and three scores.

Leonard connected with six different receivers in the game. Madrid (2-5, 2-3) also got 139 rushing yards and a TD from Matt Fuller, who finished with nine tackles and an interception on defense.

Colfax-Mingo ends the regular season with a home game against Wayne (0-7, 0-5) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 at Central College in Pella.

Madrid plays North Mahaska (2-5, 1-4) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 in New Sharon.
