ZEARING — Colfax-Mingo freshmen Xavier Woods and Harrison Rhone claimed top-10 finishes and junior Carter Gibson also ran in the top 15 during the Colo-NESCO Invitational at Dakins Lake on Thursday.
The Tigerhawk boys were fourth as a team but the top four squads were separated by only 20 points.
Ankeny Christian Academy won the boys team title with 46 points, while West Marshall (53), South Hamilton (57), Colfax-Mingo (66) and Colo-NESCO (124) completed the six-team field. There were two incomplete teams.
“With this being our third meet in a calendar week, you could tell our legs were a little tired,” C-M cross country coach Zach Tomas said. “Our efforts were awesome on a hot night, and I know this will ultimately lead to some great races later on.”
In the girls’ competition, freshman Shea Wilkins led the Tigerhawks to a fifth-place finish. There also were two incomplete squads on the girls’ side.
Woods finished eighth in the boys’ 5K race to lead C-M. He finished in 21 minutes, 15.41 seconds. Coming in just after Woods was Rhone as he was ninth in 21:15.72. Gibson’s 12th-place finish was clocked in 21:58.
The rest of the varsity runners for the C-M boys were Coleman Craig (22:20.8) in 18th, Cesar Buenrostro (22:41.94) in 21st, Owen Ament (22:44.24) in 22nd and Josue Rodriguez (23:05.45) in 26th.
Class 2A No. 18 Nicolas Thompson of West Marshall won the race in 18:31.68.
Class 1A No. 10 Grace Lidgett of North Tama won the girls’ 5K race in 21:38.56. That helped North Tama claim second in the team standings, but South Hamilton (40) was four points better at the top.
North Tama (44) edged West Marshall (45) for third and Colo-NESCO (103) and Colfax-Mingo (135) completed the field.
Wilkins was 25th to lead the C-M girls. She was clocked in 30:10.13. Devan Chadwick (31:21.01) was 29th, Kirsten Frier (32:20.73) finished 33rd, Danica Linn (32:46.8) ended up 34th and Kylie Doty (32:47.06) took 35th. Hannah Moore (42:03.14) crossed the finish line in 42nd.
