Sigourney downs Lynnville-Sully in SICL showdowns

SIGOURNEY — Lynnville-Sully and Sigourney battled for first place in the South Iowa Cedar League in both softball and baseball on Friday night.

And the Savages spoiled the Hawks’ fun in both games.

On the softball diamond, Class 1A No. 10 Sigourney scored first with a run in the first and then broke a 1-all tie with a two-run third during a 4-1 home win.

The Hawk baseball team led 6-3 after three innings, but Cade Streigle capped a five-run sixth with a grand slam as the Savages won 11-6.

The fifth-ranked Hawk softball team (15-5) was held to four hits and lost in conference play for the first time this season. L-S and Sigourney are now 9-1 in the SICL with Colfax-Mingo close behind at 8-2.

Reagan McFarland had two of the four hits and stole a base, Korinne Jansen tallied one hit, one run and one steal and Cayler Noun Harder singled and walked twice. Caitlin Alberts drove in the Hawks’ run.

Denali Conover (13-4) took the pitching loss after throwing six innings and allowing no earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

L-S was plagued by four errors. Sigourney (14-8) did not have commit an error and made it 4-1 with a run in the fifth.

On the baseball field, Conner Maston led the Hawks with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs, Caleb Rea also had two hits and Braden Alberts drew two walks.

L-S (10-8 overall, 8-2 in the SICL) scored three in the second to take a 5-3 lead and added a run in the third but did not score in the final four innings.

Sigourney (12-2, 9-1) plated two in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth to rally back.

The Hawks were limited to six hits and committed three errors. Sigourney had nine hits and were plagued by five errors.

Corder Noun Harder walked once and was hit by one pitch, Rea and Alberts each scored one run, Owen Norrish and Mason Jansen both had one RBI and Bryce Richards doubled, scored one run and had one RBI.

Reese Dunsbergen tallied one hit and scored one run.

Maston started on the mound and went five innings, allowing six runs — three earned — on five hits with seven strikeouts, two walks and three hit batters.

Lannon Montgomery tossed the sixth inning and took the loss after allowing five earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter.

BASEBALL

Lynnville-Sully 10, English Valleys 6

SULLY — A fast start propelled the Hawk baseball team to a win over English Valleys on Wednesday.

L-S scored seven runs in the first three innings and held off the Bears 10-6 at home during SICL play.

Both teams had nine hits and the Hawks won the game despite committing six errors.

Corder Noun Harder and Norrish each had two hits. Noun Harder added one run, one RBI and one steal and Norrish tallied one run, one RBI and one walk.

Noun Harder leads the Hawks with a .431 batting average and has a team-best 28 stolen bases and 23 runs scored.

Rea and Richards each had one hit, one run and one walk and Richards added an RBI. Dunsbergen finished with one hit, one run and one walk and Alberts chipped in one hit, one run, one walk and one RBI.

Carter Dunsbergen walked once, stole two bases and scored three runs, Blake Rea had one hit and one run, Maston was hit by a pitch and Davis Utech drew a walk. Ryan Annee had an RBI.

Annee started and got the win on the mound after pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing four runs — one earned — on five hits with three strikeouts and one hit batter.

Alberts tossed the final 3 1/3 innings and got the save after surrendering two runs — one earned — on two hits with three strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter.

English Valleys (3-9, 3-7) scored three runs in the first three innings and plated two in the fifth to close the gap but did not score after that.
