Area Boys Soccer Roundup: Newton sneaks past ranked Albia

ALBIA — Newton’s boys soccer team broke a scoreless match in the 57th minute and defeated Class 1A No. 9 Albia during a non-conference road battle on Friday.

The Cardinals snapped a three-match skid with a 1-0 victory. They improved to 2-4 in matches decided by one goal and it was the second 1-0 win of the year for Newton.

“We played an awful first half. We did just about everything wrong that we could do wrong,” Newton boys soccer coach Zach Jensen said. “We made a tweak to our formation at halftime. I don’t know if it helped, but we played a whole lot better. It is still coming down to the final third. We are still not finding the back of the net enough.”

Hunter Kennedy drew even with Jack Suttek for the team lead in goals when he scored in the 67th minute off an assist from Darara Dawassa.

It was the fourth goal of the season for Kennedy and he now has a team-best 10 points.

“We had more chances to score but just couldn’t finish,” Jensen said. “The one time we did score was enough for us to win. I am proud of the win and proud of the way we transitioned to a better second half. A win is a win. Hopefully we can get back to .500 next week.”

Caleb Lawson finished with three saves in 80 minutes as Newton’s keeper.

The Cardinals improved to 5-6 on the season. Albia dropped to 6-2.

Bondurant-Farrar 10, PCM 0

MONROE — Class 2A No. 8 Bondurant-Farrar ended the match at halftime as the Bluejays led 10-0 after 40 minutes and claimed their fourth straight win.

PCM, which has lost five of its last six matches, dropped to 2-7 on the season.

Caleb Gymer had two goals and two assists for B-F (9-2), Cole Nicholson tallied a pair of goals and Zach Kline finished with one goal and three assists.

Nevada 10, Central Iowa United 0

NEVADA — Jose Buenrrosto finished with three goals and two assists and Class 2A No. 4 Nevada downed Central Iowa United 10-0 at home. The game ended in the 43rd minute.

It was the third straight win for Nevada (8-1) and Central Iowa United (2-5) has lost two of its last three matches.
