PCM soccer takes down Chariton in shootout

Mustangs overcome obstacles to snap four-match skid

CHARITON — PCM’s soccer team lost to Chariton 5-1 on April 8.

The two teams faced off again on Monday and this time, the Mustangs and Chargers had a different result.

PCM competed with only 10 players during the final 20 minutes of regulation and both overtimes after a red card was issued, but the Mustangs fought through it and defeated Chariton, 3-2, in a shootout during non-conference play.

“I couldn’t be prouder or happier for this group,” PCM soccer coach Darrin Telfer said.

The Mustangs led 1-0 at halftime after a goal by Justin Johnston with 10 seconds to play in the first half.

Caden Bouwkamp’s second-half goal allowed PCM to force overtime and the Mustangs won 2-0 in the shootout after a scoreless 20 minutes of extra play.

Tyler Kuecker played goalie in the shootout and stopped three Chariton penalty kicks to secure the win. Emma George and Nik Ball converted their PKs to help the Mustangs (2-6) snap a four-match skid.

Chariton (1-7) has now lost seven straight since defeating PCM in early April.
