Chassidy Henwood claimed the only win for Newton’s girls tennis team against Pella Christian on Tuesday at Aurora Heights Park.
The Cardinals lost 10-1 to the Eagles during Little Hawkeye Conference play. Nine of the 10 wins for Pella Christian came in straight sets.
Newton (2-2 overall, 1-1 in the conference) was competitive in a lot of the sets but just fell short of the win column.
Henwood won her No. 2 singles match in three sets, winning 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.
At No. 1 doubles, Maggie Garrett and Kya Butler lost in three sets, falling 6-3, 4-6, 10-2.
Henwood and Katie McConnell played No. 2 doubles. Lauryn Garrett and Alyssa Shannon played No. 4 doubles. Both groups lost 6-4, 6-4.
The other two doubles matches had second-set tiebreakers. Newton’s No. 3 team of Megan Lovan and Jerica Dafflitto lost 6-0, 7-6 (6) and the No. 5 team of Molly Lovan and Ella Swarts lost 6-1, 7-6 (1).
In singles, Maggie Garrett lost 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. Butler lost 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Megan Lovan lost 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 and McConnell lost 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5. Lauryn Garrett was defeated 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
