EDDYVILLE — The small-school division at the EBF Girls Invitational on Thursday featured seven schools. Three of those school reside in Jasper County. And all of them finished in the top three of the final standings.
Baxter won 10 events and had 17 top-three finishes to win going away, while Lynnville-Sully tallied six victories and five third-place finishes in finishing as the runner-up. PCM’s JV team was third after claiming runner-up five times.
Mandee Selover had the best performance of her short career so far, scoring 32.5 team points, while Merrin Ziesman also had her best night as a prep with 20 points. Bree Buswell collected 16.5 points for the Bolts, who scored 165 points in first.
L-S, which was led by Brooke Conover’s 13 points, scored 138 points in second and PCM’s JV was third with 72.
Twin Cedars (70) and HLV (54) completed the top five and Ankeny Christian Academy (24) and Albia (18) rounded out the field.
Athletes from Baxter, L-S or the PCM JV filled up the top finishes in most of the events.
In the 100-meter dash, L-S’ Carsyn McFarland won with a time of 14.35 seconds and Abby Roberts finished third in 15.87. PCM’s Reese Palm was second in 15.61 and Skylar Burns was fourth in 15.92.
Selover won three events for Baxter. She won the 200 with a time of 29.31 and L-S’ Aliya James was third in 29.94.
Selover’s win in the 400 was clocked at 1:06.55. Conover finished fourth in 1:13.6 and PCM’s Alissa Ives was fifth in 1:14.01.
Cayler Noun Harder and Megan Van Zante of L-S went 1-3 in the 800 with times of 2:43.22 and 2:57.02, respectively. Baxter’s Regan Russell finished second in 2:46.66.
The top six finishers in the 100 hurdles were area athletes. Buswell won the race in 19.31, but L-S’ Allie Van Wyk (19.37) was second and Baxter’s Maddie Pierce (19.93) finished third.
Burns (20.29) took fourth, PCM’s Elaina Buswell (20.77) was fifth and L-S’ Elizabeth Elliott (20.8) finished sixth.
Baxter’s Elie Tuhn and Russell went 1-3 in the 3,000. Tuhn won the race in 11:40.53 and Russell was third in 15:19.16.
L-S’ Meleisha Vos won the 400 hurdles in 1:21.77. Baxter’s Sophie Meyer (1:24.11) and Carlee Zahurones (1:28.57) were second and fifth, respectively.
Ziesman won the shot put and discus. The Bolts were 1-2 in the discus as Ziesman won it with a throw of 78 feet, 11 inches and Jo Harder was second with a toss of 73-10. PCM’s Miranda Bellinghausen (68-5) finished fourth and L-S’ Lily Zylstra (65-9) took fifth.
Ziesman’s winning throw in the shot put was marked at 26-10. PCM’s Jaiden Fairbanks (25-9 3/4) and Cate Humpal (25-8) went 2-3, L-S’ Jaden Brand (25-6 1/2) and Alyssa Lepley (22-11) were 4-6 and Harder (23-11 1/2) took fifth.
Selover’s final individual win came in the long jump as she leaped 15-2. L-S went 2-3 as Morgan Jones (13-8 1/4) was second and Reagan McFarland (13-3 3/4) took third. Baxter’s Maggie Schabilion (12-10 3/4) was fifth.
Conover was the lone area top finisher in the high jump as she finished second with a leap of 4-2.
In the 1,500, Baxter’s Kailee Conradi finished second in 5:53.74 and Morgan Ratliff (6:32.45) was fourth. L-S’ Kinsley Tice (6:21.64) finished third.
Baxter and L-S both won three relays.
The Hawks’ winning 4x100 team of Carsyn McFarland, James, Reagan McFarland and Dylann Huyser won with a time of 55.67. PCM’s JV team of Bri Kalar, Belle Hudnut, Izzi Beery and Jayden McClelland was second in 1:00.14.
L-S won the 4x200 in 1:59.37 with Caitlin Alberts, Jones, James and Huyser. PCM’s JV team of Hudnut, Hayleigh Spray, Elle Davis and Katie Henderson finished third in 2:09.54.
The Hawks also won the 4x800 relay in 11:09.59. That foursome included Alberts, Tice, Van Zante and Noun Harder.
Baxter won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:19.92 with Pierce, Meyer, Zahurones and Bree Buswell.
The Bolts’ distance medley relay team of Pierce, Schabilion, Conradi and Tuhn won with a time of 4:51.35. Riley Van Maanen, Natalie Nikkel, Cally Gibbs and Vos took second in 5:21.32.
Baxter also won the 4x400 with Bree Buswell, Schabilion, Tuhn and Selover. They finished in 4:45.07. PCM’s JV foursome of Davis, Riley DeVore, Tiffani Koonce and Lily Bowen were second in 4:50.38.
PCM’s JV and Baxter were separated by .07 seconds in the sprint medley relay. The Mustangs were second with Avery Houser, Beery, Reese Palm and Ives and they finished in 2:12.40. Baxter took third in 2:12.47 with Pierce, Conradi, Buswell and Schabilion.
