INDIANOLA — Newton’s girls track and field team faced some very good Class 4A competition during the Ron Werling Relays hosted by Indianola on Thursday.
The Cardinals couldn’t find the win column but claimed six top-three finishes and came in fifth in the team standings with 62 points.
Indianola cruised to the team title with 149 points. Ottumwa (91), Ankeny Centennial (87) and West Des Moines Valley (75) all were in front of the Cardinals, while Des Moines Hoover (57), Des Moines East (29) and Ankeny (24) rounded out the eight-team field.
Addy Terpstra led Newton with a 10-point night as she was second in the 100-meter hurdles and helped the Cardinals placed third in the shuttle hurdle relay.
Terpstra’s time in the 100 hurdles was 17.27 seconds. The shuttle hurdle relay team included Terpstra, Chloe Rorabaugh, Alyssa Beerends and Libby Shores and they finished in 1 minute, 19.01 seconds.
Casse Adams scored eight points on the night as she was second in the 400 with a time of 1:15.36.
The sprint medley relay team of Chassidy Henwood, Kynnedei Terpstra, JaQuay Priest and Alyssa Shannon finished second with a time of 2:01.27.
The distance medley team was third. That foursome included Priest, Henwood, Shannon and Kate Muckler and they finished in 4:48.87.
The 4x400 relay team also was third. That group featured Grace Benson, Gracie Clayton, Desirae Gifford and Taylor Schilling and they hit the finish line in 4:52.16.
There were four other top-five individual finishes. Muckler was fourth in the 800 in 2:43.94 and Kealey Manning was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet, 9 3/4 inches.
Kelsey Church placed fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 13:22.31 and Marissa Cunningham was fifth in the discus with a throw of 79-4
