Moko leads Newton boys track to third at South Tama

Cardinals win four events, finish 1-2 in 800-meter run

TAMA — Keith Moko won two individual events and was part of a winning relay for Newton’s boys track and field team on Tuesday.

The Cardinals won four events in all and scored seven top-three finishes as they were third as a team at the South Tama County Early Bird Invitational.

Newton scored 90 points in third. Lisbon won the meet easily with 173 points, while BCLUW was second with 104 points. South Tama was fourth with 69 followed by Oelwein (60), East Marshall (58) and GMG (22).

Moko won the high jump and the 200 and was the second leg on the winning distance medley relay team.

Moko leaped a season-best 6 foot, 4 inches to win the high jump and won the 200-meter dash in 24.06 seconds.

The distance medley relay team of Nate Maki, Moko, Jackson Mace-Maynard and Treycen Garton won with a time of 3 minutes, 47.02 seconds.

Mace-Maynard and Garton also were 1-2 in the 800. Mace-Maynard won the race in a career-best time of 2:00.36 and Garton was the runner-up with a time of 2:04.75.

The Cardinals also were second in the sprint medley relay. That foursome included Zay Arguello, Zane Biondi, Maki and Garton and they finished the race in 1:41.07.

Nate Davies was second in the discus with a throw of 134 feet, 3 inches. Jaden Shannon finished sixth in the event with a toss of 107-5.

Newton was fourth in two hurdle events. Reese Hammons finished fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 18.17 and Brody Bauer placed fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.4.
