Terpstra sisters lead Newton girls at track opener

BOONE — The Terpstra sisters led Newton’s girls track team on Thursday during the Cardinals’ season-opening meet.

Addy Terpstra won the 200-meter dash, Kynnedei Terpstra was second in the 100 and the Cardinals finished fourth in the five-team field.

Kealey Manning had Newton’s other win on the night as the Cardinals scored 75 points in all.

Marshalltown won the meet with 150 points, while Fort Dodge (112) edged host Boone (111) for second. Ames scored nine points in fifth.

Addy Terpstra scored a team-best 12.5 points in her varsity debut. She won the 200 in 28.33 seconds, while her older sister Kynnedei was second in the 100 in 13.97.

Manning’s winning throw in the shot put was marked at 32 feet, 0 1/2 inches. Teammate Tierney Adams gave Newton double points in the event as she was fourth with a toss of 28-4.

Casse Adams also gave Newton double points in the 200 as she was fifth in a time of 33.01.

The Cardinals were second in two relays.

The 4x800 relay team of Kate Muckler, Ashay Malow, Willow Oswalt and Morgan Stalzer finished as the runner-up in 11 minutes, 38 seconds.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Libby Shores, Addy Terpstra, Gracie Clayton and JaQuay Priest finished second in 1:17.41.

The Cardinals claimed two third-place finishes. Kelsey Church grabbed the bronze medal in the 1,500 run, finishing in 6:03.

The 4x100 relay team of Priest, Shores and the Terpstra sisters also finished third in 53.89.

Shores and Clayton were fourth in individual hurdle events. Shores was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 19.84 and Clayton ran a 1:27.02 to finish fourth in the 400 hurdles.

Newton was fifth in four events. Heather Perry was fifth in the 400 in 1:19.22, Amor Kilburn took fifth in the 3,000 in 17:06.04, Maggie Williams was fifth in the discus with a toss of 73-1 and Shores placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 12-11 1/2.

Newton was fourth in four relays.

The 4x200 relay team of Haley Catron, Adams, Clayton and Taylor Schilling were fourth in 2:05.20. The 4x400 relay group of Muckler, Malow, Schilling and Oswalt were fourth in 4:53.16.

The distance medley and sprint medley relays also were fourth. The distance medley included Jessie Hutchinson, Kenleigh Jack, Desirae Gifford and Abby Smith and they finished in 5:34.16. The sprint medley team featured Annie Main, Catron, Priest and Schilling and they hit the finish line in 2:12.63.
