LE GRAND — PCM senior Jacob Van Winkle was part of four wins, the Mustangs claimed five relay victories and the squad finished second in the team race at the East Marshall Boys Early Bird Meet on Tuesday.
Lynnville-Sully recorded three wins and 14 top-three finishes in third place.
Dike-New Hartford won the meet with 139 points. PCM scored 123 in second and L-S had 113 in third. The rest of the six-team field included East Marshall (107), AGWSR (60) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck (18).
“There were a ton of positives to take away from tonight,” L-S head coach Darin Arkema said. “That being said, I think each individual and coach could identify several areas our whole team and individually that need worked on for more improvement. So we take the experience and do just that, keep working for improvement.”
The Mustangs and Hawks controlled the three individual sprinting events.
PCM’s Van Winkle won the 100-meter dash in 11.58 seconds, but L-S’ Corder Noun Harder was second in 11.89 and PCM’s Andrew Mitchell finished fourth in 12.07.
Van Winkle also won the 200 in 24.25, while PCM’s Justin Maggard was second in 24.71. L-S’ Josh Hardenbrook finished third in 24.72.
In the 400, L-S’ Caleb Rea won it in 57.8. PCM’s Trey Broderson finished second in 1 minute, 3.16 seconds and teammate Mickey Mackewich ended up fifth in 1:05.95.
The area teams also had success in the 400 hurdles with L-S’ James Gruver winning it in 1:02.18. PCM’s August Stock was second with a time of 1:03.84 and L-S’ Blake Rea finished third in 1:06.36. PCM’s Griffin Olson finished fifth in 1:11.41.
The Mustangs won the 4x100, 4x200, sprint medley, distance medley and 4x100 weight person relays. PCM’s second 4x100 team also placed fourth but was awarded no team points for the finish.
PCM’s foursome of Maggard, Van Winkle, Gatlin Boell and Mitchell won the 4x100 in 47.82. L-S was third as Noun Harder, Hardenbrook, Kyle Squires and Ryan Annee finished in 48.64.
The Mustangs’ 4x200 relay team of Maggard, Mitchell, Landon Fenton and Van Winkle finished first in 1:38.21. The L-S team of Squires, Blake Rea, Annee and Hardenbrook was third in 1:42.34.
PCM’s winning sprint medley relay team included Fenton, Kaden Hale, Mitchell and Beau Webb. They finished in 1:43.29. The Hawks were third in 1:43.80 with Noun Harder, Hardenbrook, Caleb Rea and Conner Maston.
In the distance medley relay, PCM won in 4:04.34 with the foursome of Fenton, Stock, Boell and Webb.
The 4x100 weight person relay is not a team scoring event but PCM and L-S went 1-2. The Mustangs won it in 54.74 with Nathan Vanderpool, Gavin Van Baale, Gabe McDonald and Caleb Kuefner. L-S’ foursome of Noah Johnson, Jaden Norman, Benjamin Orchirbat and Gage Elscott finished the race in 59.15.
The Hawks’ relay win came in the shuttle hurdle. The team of Carter Dunsbergen, Blake Rea, Mason Jansen and Gruver finished in 1:10.83. PCM’s team of Boell, Gavin Fenton, Broderson and Maggard finished third in 1:12.26.
PCM’s 4x800 relay team was third. That group featured Carson Duinink, Jack Eighemy, Garin Padget and Dylan Masterson and they finished in 10:31.41.
D-NH went 1-2 in the 4x400 relay. L-S finished fourth overall but was awarded third-place points with the group of Caleb Rea, Maston, Gruver and Noun Harder. They finished the race in 3:58.38.
Maston was second in the 800 with a time of 2:23.17 and Dunsbergen finished second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.94. Zach Morningstar gave the Hawks a third-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 12:05.29.
L-S went 2-4-6 in the high jump. Maston was second with a leap of 5 feet, 9 inches. Caleb Rea was fourth and Dunsbergen finished sixth but both Hawks jumped 5-4.
In the shot put, PCM’s Kuefner was fourth with a toss of 37-10 and Durant Van Dyke finished fifth with a throw of 37-9.
Van Baale was fourth in the discus with a throw of 104-9 and Ben Buys finished fifth with a toss of 96-4.
Oelmann of PCM also finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16-7 1/4.
