BONDURANT — Competing as the only Class 1A programs in the field, Baxter’s track and field teams both placed sixth at the Bluejay Coed Relays on Monday.
The season opener for both teams came against mostly 3A schools.
The Baxter girls scored 57 points in sixth. Host Bondurant-Farrar won the meet with 156 points. Winterset (137) was next followed by Carlisle (128), Iowa Falls-Alden (103) and Roland-Story (89). The Bolts were better than Boone (47.5) and Saydel (14).
In the boys’ team race, Baxter scored 30 points in sixth. Indianola won the meet with 180 points. Carlisle (152), Norwalk (141), Bondurant-Farrar (114) and Winterset (76) rounded out the top five. The Bolts outscored Saydel (25) and the B-F JV (9).
Junior Elie Tuhn led the way for the Baxter girls, scoring 15.5 points on the night. She was second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 12 minutes, 6.94 seconds and finished third in the 1,500 in 5:33.85.
Tuhn also anchored the distance medley relay to third. The foursome of senior Maddie Pierce, junior Maggie Schabilion, sophomore Mandee Selover and Tuhn finished the race in 4:53.89.
The other top-three finish came from Selover. She grabbed the bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 1 inch.
Senior Kailee Conradi gave the Bolts double points in the 3,000 as she was fourth in 13:17.62. Sophomore Bree Buswell finished fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:21.55.
Buswell also was part of the sprint medley relay team which placed fourth. Pierce, Buswell, Schabilion and Selover finished fourth with a time of 2:07.51.
The Baxter boys grabbed three top-five finishes. Leading the way was sophomore Carson Scroggins, who finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches.
Scroggins also teamed up with sophomore Cody Damman and freshmen Logan Jones and Treyton Travis to finish fourth in the distance medley relay. That foursome finished the race in 4:19.17.
Sophomore Trice Clapper had the other top-five finish, placing fourth in the shot put with a toss of 43-9 1/4.
The Bolts are in action again at the PCM Coed Invitational at 4:30 p.m. on April 6 in Monroe.
