L-S wrestling finishes fifth at sectionals, advances three to districts

Maxwell Mintle pins his way to 145-pound sectional title

COLFAX — Lynnville-Sully brought eight wrestlers to Colfax-Mingo High School for a Class 1A Sectional tournament on Saturday.

Three of them advanced to this weekend’s district tournament. And the Hawks finished fifth in the team race.

Leading the way for L-S was Maxwell Mintle, who took first at145 pounds. Miles Mintle (197) and Gentry Walston (113) were both second at their weights.

The top two finishers at each sectional around the state advance to districts. Three Hawks just missed advancing with third-place finishes.

L-S scored 125 points in fifth, defeating host Colfax-Mingo (119) and Collins-Maxwell (71). Pleasantville won the sectional title with 195 points, while the rest of the top five included Interstate 35 (191.5), Southeast Warren (176) and Martensdale-St. Marys (131).

Maxwell Mintle (29-3) won both of his matches by fall. He was thrown to the mat hard in the championship match and took an injury time timeout but recovered to score the bracket-clinching pin.

Miles Mintle and Walston were both 1-1 on the day with their win coming by pin. Miles Mintle (19-7) lost his championship match by fall, while Walston (29-10) lost his 113 final 16-7 to Class 1A No. 7 Noah Strohmeyer of Colfax-Mingo.

C.J. Snethen (138), Reese Dunsbergen (152) and Ty Jones (160) all took third at their weights.

Snethen (27-11) won twice by fall but lost in the semifinals 16-0. Dunsbergen (25-13) won twice by fall but lost by pin in the semifinals. Jones (12-13) was 1-1 on the day with a loss by pin and a win by pin.

Caleb Rea also finished fourth at 132 and Kyle Squires was fifth at 170. Rea (16-16) was 1-2 with a pin and Squires (17-14) finished 1-1 with a pin. He lost 6-4 in his first match.

The Hawks had open weights at 106, 120, 126, 182, 220 and 285.
