Five Mustangs advance to districts

Tool, Fenton, Cooper Sloan all win sectional titles

KNOXVILLE — Colby Tool has two losses this season on the wrestling mat. And only one of those came against Class 2A competition.

North Polk’s Chance Bockenstedt got a big move early during his 8-4 victory over Tool back in December.

Tool has been waiting since that day to get another crack at Bockenstedt and the rematch went to Tool as he claimed the 152-pound sectional championship on Feb. 6.

Tool was one of five Mustang grapplers who advanced to this week’s district tournament at ADM of Adel. And Landon Fenton and Cooper Sloan joined Tool as sectional champions.

Kinser Sloan and Remington Fry advanced to districts as runner-ups.

The Mustangs were fourth in the team race. Class 2A No. 10 Bondurant-Farrar won the sectional championship with 225.5 points. The rest of the top five were Ballard (206), North Polk (178.5), PCM (162) and Knoxville (147.5). Saydel (86) completed the six-team field.

PCM brought 11 wrestlers to sectionals with 120, 126 and 132 as the three open weights.

Class 2A No. 4 Tool was 2-0 on the day at 152. He won his first match by fall and then finished first after a 4-3 win over third-ranked Bockenstedt.

Tool trailed 2-1 after the first period but rallied with a three-point second period.

In the second, Tool (40-2) tied it with an escape with 47 seconds on the clock and immediately went in for a single leg and took the lead with a takedown.

In the third, Bockenstedt (30-2) got one point for an escape but couldn’t get another takedown to win.

Class 2A No. 4 Fenton (33-2) was 2-0 at 145 with two first-period falls. Cooper Sloan (31-14) was 2-0 at 220. He won his first match by fall and then won 1-0 in the finals.

Kinser Sloan was 1-1 on the day at 285. He advanced to the championship bout after knocking off top seed Brady Ehrsman of Ballard, 3-2, in the ultimate tiebreaker. He was defeated by pin in the championship match.

Fry (22-21) also was 1-1 at 106. He won once by fall and lost once by fall. His loss came to 2A No. 7 Cody Hay of Bondurant-Farrar.

Zeb Padget (170) and Nate Richards (182) both were fourth at their weights. They each went 1-2 with one pin.
