Newton grapplers can’t find win column at DCG

No. 10 Amos scores big win over No. 5 Slade, finishes 3-0 on the night

GRIMES — Since a loss to Class 2A No. 3 Eric Kinkaid of Camanche, Newton junior Brennan Amos is 9-0 with seven pins. And on Thursday night, Amos got his first signature win of the season during a road quadrangular at Dallas Center-Grimes High School.

The Cardinals couldn’t find the win column against DCG, Ames or West Des Moines Valley, but Amos’ 5-1 victory over 3A No. 5 Brent Slade of Ames was the highlight of the night for Newton.

Amos was 3-0 on the night at 145 pounds and the 10th-ranked Cardinal is now 20-3 on the season. His other two wins were by pin.

In the team competition, Newton (4-15) lost 60-18 to Ames, 58-15 to host DCG and 67-12 to Valley.

Besides the big win by Amos against Slade, Newton also got wins by fall from Colin Sharp (152) and James Wenndt (160) and Avery White won his 120-pound match 7-5 in SV-1.

In the loss to DCG, Amos and William Muckler won by fall and Wenndt won 8-3. Amos and Jason Weithers both scored wins by fall against Valley.
