Pella hoops too much for PCM

Slow starts doom Mustangs against Dutch

PELLA — Both PCM basketball teams got off to slow starts against Pella on Saturday.

In the boys’ game, Andrew Mitchell put in 16 points, but the Class 3A No. 1 Dutch led 33-9 after one quarter and never looked back during an 84-53 non-conference game.

Mitchell also had four assists in the loss. Gatlin Boell finished with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists, Carson VandeLune scored nine points and Durant Van Dyke chipped in seven points and seven boards.

Sage Burns scored three points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out six assists.

The Mustangs (6-7) shot 38 percent from the floor, were 9-of-22 from 3-point range and made 6-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Karl Miller led Pella (10-0) with 26 points and Noah Allen scored 17 points.

GIRLS

Pella 70, PCM 34

The Lady Dutch led 26-9 after one quarter and cruised to the 70-34 non-conference home win over PCM in girls’ basketball action.

The Mustangs were outscored 19-6 in the second quarter and 25-19 in the second half.

PCM shot 28 percent from the floor, hit 2-of-9 from 3-point range and connected on 12-of-19 from the foul line.

Lilli Baird had 13 points and four rebounds to lead PCM (1-13), while Riley Hjortshoj chipped in six points and three rebounds.

Emma George scored seven points, Paige Steenhoek scored four and Celeste Wagaman put in three.

Pella improved to 6-6 after the win.
