Tool leads PCM wrestling to fifth at Centerville

Seven Mustangs finish in top five at Big Red Invitational

CENTERVILLE — Colby Tool won all four of his matches by fall, seven Mustangs finished in the top five and PCM’s wrestling team finished fifth at the Mike Halupnick Big Red Invitational on Saturday.

Tool was the only individual champion for the Mustangs as he was 4-0 with four pins at 152 pounds. Tool, who is ranked third at 152 in Class 2A, has now won 12 straight matches and is 28-1 with 24 pins on the season.

The Mustangs scored 109 points and finished fifth in the 13-team field. Creston/Orient-Macksburg won the team title with 201.5 points. Clarinda (170), Bondurant-Farrar (152) and Ottumwa (118) also were ahead of PCM.

Donovan Nickelson (195) and Cooper Sloan (220) were both third at their weights. Remington Fry (106), Hewitt Brinegar (120), Zeb Padget (170) and Kinser Sloan (285) all were fifth. Class 2A No. 4 Landon Fenton (145) did not compete for PCM.

The tournament featured pool-play matches before bracket matches.

Tool was 1-0 in Pool A before finishing 3-0 with three pins in the 152 bracket.

Nickelson went 2-1 in Pool A at 195. His loss came to 2A No. 2 Jackson Kinsella of Creston/O-M. Nickelson (19-11) was 1-1 in bracket matches, losing by fall to 2A No. 8 Cole Ridnour of Clarinda before taking a medical forfeit over Kinsella (31-3) in the third-place match.

Cooper Sloan (22-10) was 2-0 with two pins in Pool D. In the bracket matches, he was 2-1 with two more falls. His only loss came to 2A No. 3 Crew Howard of Clarinda. Howard (28-1) was the bracket champion.

Kinser Sloan was 3-2 at heavyweight. He was 1-2 in Pool B and won by medical forfeit and by fall in the bracket matches.

Fry, Brinegar and Padget were all fifth and each wrestler finished 2-2. Fry won twice by decision and Brinegar (21-8) won once by fall and once by decision. Padget won his final two matches by fall.

Nate Richards finished sixth at 182 and Wyatt Wheeler was sixth at 160. Richards won twice by fall. Wheeler’s only win was a 13-4 major decision.
