BETTENDORF — Newton’s wrestling team competed in a very tough field at the Bettendorf Midwest Shootout on Saturday.
Led by Brennan Amos and Owen Sanger, the Cardinals placed sixth in the team race with 69 points.
Class 3A No. 3 Waukee won the team title with 256.5 points. Second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock was second with 248 points and sixth-ranked Bettendorf was third with 204.5.
Also finishing ahead of Newton were Urbandale (115) and 2A Camanche (90.5). Burlington (63) and Davenport West (58.5) completed the eight-team field.
Amos (12-3) was second at 145 pounds. He was 2-1 on the day, winning once by fall and once by 4-0 decision. His loss was a 19-1 technical fall defeat to 2A No. 3 Eric Kinkaid (27-2) of Camanche.
Sanger was third at 195. There were four wrestlers in the bracket and two of them were ranked. He lost his first match 8-7 to 3A No. 8 Tanner Spyksma of Waukee. His only other match ended in a win by fall.
The other top-five finishers were William Muckler and Colin Sharp.
Muckler finished fourth at heavyweight. He was 2-2 on the day with two wins by pin. One of his losses came against 3A No. 7 Ben Reiland of Waukee.
Sharp was fifth at 152. He was 1-2 on the day with a win by pin.
