Ten area girls compete at Ogden wrestling tournament

Three Tigerhawks win individual titles, Newton’s Brown finishes second

OGDEN — Ten area girls traveled to Ogden on Saturday to take part in a girls’ wrestling tournament that featured almost 100 wrestlers. Three Colfax-Mingo grapplers returned home with individual titles, while four other area competitors finished second in their weight brackets.

Colfax-Mingo’s Mariah Webster continued her hot streak with three more wins. She won her bracket with two pins and a 5-4 TB-1 victory over sixth-ranked Tatum Shepherd of Ridge View.

The other individual titles for the Tigerhawks came from Melany Vry and Miranda McGill.

Newton’s Grace Brown and Colfax-Mingo’s Kirsten Frier, Kylie Doty and Maggie Schroeder all finished second. Newton’s Emma Lopez-Garcia and Colfax-Mingo’s Danica Linn placed third in their brackets and C-M’s Selena Lopez placed fourth.

Webster won her bracket for the second straight night after winning at Highland on Friday. Webster, who is ranked No. 5 at 120 pounds, edged sixth-ranked Shepherd and pinned Woodward-Granger’s Charity Mickles, who is ranked fifth at 113.

McGill won her bracket with three wins, two coming by fall and another by a 7-3 decision. Vry won her bracket with one pin, an 8-4 decision and a 14-1 major decision victory.

Newton’s Brown came into the weekend ranked second at heavyweight but she was pinned by third-ranked Olivia Huckfelt of Spencer. Brown won her other two matches by fall to finish second.

Doty is ranked fourth at 132. She was 2-1 on the day with her lone loss coming by fall to Ridge View’s Izzy Deeds, who is ranked fourth at 138. Doty also pinned West Des Moines Valley’s Jazmyn Knutson, who came into the weekend ranked eighth at 132.

Schroeder, who is ranked fifth at 170, was 2-1 on the day with two pins. She lost by fall to third-ranked Morgan Griffin of Spencer and pinned seventh-ranked Maria Elizond of Humboldt.

Frier is ranked ninth at 138 but she defeated No. 8 Laura Kipusu of West Des Moines Valley 8-5. She was 2-1 on the day as her other win came by fall.

Linn, who is ranked 10th at 113, had a tough bracket. She was 2-1 on the day and finished third. Her loss was a 2-0 decision against sixth-ranked Calla Langel of LeMars. She also defeated eighth-ranked Taylor Atwell of Perry 4-0 and ninth-ranked Jolynn Tiefenthaler of Ridge View 11-9 in SV-1.

Lopez-Garcia was 1-2 in her weight bracket for Newton. She won her first match by fall. C-M’s Lopez went 0-3.
