Cardinal bowlers split with B-F

Newton girls down Lady Jays, boys fall

Thomas Hodnett and Dallas King both rolled season-best series for Newton’s boys’ bowling team on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Cardinals to a win against Bondurant-Farrar.

The Newton girls, on the other hand, did take down the Lady Jays easily at Cardinal Lanes.

“It was great being able to have the team back at our home house,” Newton bowling coach Christie Hughes said. “The scores weren’t as high as we would have liked, but we’re definitely getting there.”

Abby Price finished first individually and Bailey Hansen came in second as the Cardinal girls defeated Bondurant-Farrar by 240 pins, winning 2,170 to 1,930.

In the boys’ matchup, Hodnett’s season-best 364 series was good for third overall as Bondurant-Farrar defeated Newton by 119 pins as the final score was 2,667 to 2,548.

“We have a strong set of leaders in our captains,” Hughes said. “They do a good job of keeping their teams focused and coaching each other.”

Newton’s girls led 1,418 to 1,250 heading into the Baker games. Then the Cardinals pulled even further ahead with a 752-680 advantage in the Bakers.

Price’s 355 series was tops on the day. She started slow with a 149 but then rolled six strikes to score a 206 in the second game.

Hansen had the top girls’ score in the first game with a 164 but followed it up with a 123 for a 287 series.

The rest of the varsity lineup included Jenna Miller (267), Bekah Weithers (259), Libbie Keith (250) and Genessa Slings (237). The top individual game in that group was Miller’s 139 and Weithers’ 259 series was a season-best.

Bondurant-Farrar’s Emily Shafer rolled a 269 to finish third individually.

We have a strong set of leaders in our captains. They do a good job of keeping their teams focused and coaching each other.

In the girls’ JV competition, Newton defeated B-F 1,807 to 1,590. Sydni Followill rolled a season-best 316 series to lead the way, while Kaitlyn Gifford had a season-best 305.

The Newton boys trailed B-F 1,820 to 1,713 before the Baker games. The Cardinals and Bluejays were separated by just 12 pins in the Bakers.

B-F had the top two individual series for the day as Ryan Stanley had a 384 and Noah Robben rolled a 374.

Hodnett started with a 191 and followed it up with a 173.

King wasn’t too far behind Hodnett with a season-best 359 series. He opened the day with seven strikes in the first game and rolled a season-high 210. Sebastian King also had a 359 series as he put together individual games of 205 and 154. He had five strikes in the opening game.

Ben Zeien (328), Owen Guldberg (303) and Logan Bown (295) completed the varsity roster. Zeien led the way in that group with a 171 individual game.

The B-F JV boys downed Newton 2,162 to 2,019. Owen Muhs rolled a 291 series and Evan Benac had a 282.

The Cardinals go back-to-back this week, playing at Clarke on Friday and at Oskaloosa on Saturday.

“We’re looking forward to our back-to-back meets,” Hughes said. “They are always good competition.”
