Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. A heart attack occurs approximately every 40 seconds, and one in four deaths can be attributed to heart disease. With such staggering statistics, it’s important for adults to understand the risk factors associated with heart disease and, as it is largely preventable, to avoid it. Here are three excellent tips for a healthy heart.
1. The main risk factors for heart disease are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and the use of tobacco. Approximately half of adults in the U.S. have at least one of these risk factors. One of the best things you can do, if you use tobacco, is to quit. Smoking is considered one of the most preventable causes of premature death in our country.
2. Get regular cardiovascular exercise, and include strength training, to keep your heart strong and to build muscle. Have your doctor determine your target heart rate and ask for recommendations for the best ways to reach it. According to the American Heart Association, you should exercise five times a week, for at least 30 minutes per session. An annual physical is also important, so you can have your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and other heart health benchmarks checked and monitored.
3. Follow a healthy diet plan that is low in sodium and high in protein and good fats. Heart-healthy foods include salmon and other fish high in omega-3 fatty acids; nuts and berries; oats and other whole grains; leafy green vegetables; fruits; eggs; beans; and lean meats. If you’re at risk for diabetes, get tested. Untreated diabetes can lead to or worsen heart disease, and up to 20% of people who have diabetes aren’t aware of it.
February is Heart Health Month, a great time to spread awareness and share information about the importance of a healthy heart.
