SF 394 is moving forward in the Iowa Senate and will go to the House next. The bill would make it much harder for Iowa families that have been harmed by the widespread use of herbicides and pesticides to get any measure of justice. More than 55 million pounds of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides are applied in Iowa annually. These poisons end up in the soil, air and water. The widespread use of herbicide resistant crops means that these chemicals are now commonly used late in the growing season, so the poisons are absorbed directly into the grains that are used for animal and human food. We are being exposed daily to these toxins. Not surprisingly, as more people are harmed, the number of damage lawsuits has· risen. Bayer and their industry lobbyists are pushing hard for a legal shield against damage lawsuits because it hurts their profits. Please reach out to your legislators, contact info at www.lowa.legis.gov/legislators, and let them know that you oppose this legislation and that it’s wrong to put corporate profits ahead of the health of Iowans.
