Letter to the Editor: I‘m casting my vote for Jon Dunwell

What I know about Jon:

1. He is a communicator with experience in listening, studying, applying information and problem-solving.

An example: The League of Women Voters had a forum on school choice issues. I was there and heard many a legitimate reason parents had for using other than the public schools for a child of theirs. Jon Dunwell was there also and heard. People talk like school choice will ruin public schools. I worked for 31 years in Newton Schools and am proud of all the teachers and staff. No way would I have thought about any other source of schooling for my children. Parents will do the same if convinced their child will receive what is best for them. If not, why should they not have a choice since they pay taxes as well.

2. Jon is service-oriented. He might not have lived his whole life in Newton, but he has served others wherever he was or is. In Florida through pastoring, volunteering as Senior Chaplain for Orange County Sheriff’s Office overseeing 40 chaplains, serving on the YMCA board there helping start two new YMCAs, and chairman of the Senior’s First Meals on Wheels serving 1,200 home-bound senior five days a week. Then in Newton as Rotary president, Chamber of Commerce, Main Street and filling in preaching in several churches.

3. Jon worked for an increase in teacher pay to the 5th highest in the nation in our state with the 5th lowest cost of living.

4. Jon seeks out his constituent’s knowledge, needs, and suggestions. You do not necessarily have to go to him, he will come to you.

5. We are truly fortunate that Jon Dunwell has been willing to be our representative. I am voting for more of his excellent service.
