Jack “JD” Strickland, age 71, of Council Bluffs and formerly of Newton, Iowa, passed away in the comfort of his home on March 20, 2025.
Services for JD will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025 beginning at 11:00 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Jack David Stickland was born August 27, 1953 in Los Angeles, California. He was the oldest of three children born to Rex Strickland and Martha Utsinger (Brown). JD along with his family grew up in Newton, Iowa. In 1972, JD enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood and Fort Carson. He served as a recruiter for the US Army for four years until he was honorably discharged from service.
On May 28, 1971, JD was united in marriage to Diane Warnick in Unionville, Missouri. As they began their early years of marriage, they began their family having two children, Jennifer and Christopher while JD was stationed in Ft. Carson in Colorado. After he was discharged from services, they came back to Newton, Iowa where they called home. JD went to the police academy and became a police officer for a number of years before he and the family moved to Texas where he became a deputy sheriff. Before coming back to Iowa, he became an over the road truck driver for various companies over the years working until he was no longer able due to health.
In his free time, JD was a member of the Izaak Walton League in Newton, Iowa. He loved to spend as much time as possible outdoors whether that was going fishing, camping, or going hunting. Spring time was JD’s favorite so he was then able to look forward to mushroom hunting.
JD is survived by his wife, Diane Strickland; his children, Jennifer (Doug) Taft and Christopher Strickland; nine grandchildren, Kaylynn, Kindra, Kimberly, Brianna, Kelsey, Dalton, Maddie, Kristie and Boston; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Linda Drew and Clark (Deb) Hassig alongside numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex Strickland and Martha Utsinger and his sister, Debbie VanNater (Strickland).
