It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Kathleen (Kathy) Ann Deppe Richardson. Surrounded by her loved ones, Kathy peacefully left us on Sunday, February 23, 2025, after a courageous four-year battle with ALS. There will be a celebration of life for Kathy on Saturday March 22 at the Izaak Walton League in Newton Iowa from 3:00 to 7:00 pm with a small service at 4:00 pm.
Born on August 23, 1951, in Grinnell, Iowa, Kathy was the third of four children to Maynard and Juanita Deppe. She cherished her childhood on the family farm near Rock Creek Lake outside of Kellogg, Iowa. Her early education began at a country school just a mile from home, and she later graduated from Grinnell High School in 1969.
In 1969, Kathy married John Crawford, and together they were blessed with two wonderful children, Ashley Ann and Travis John. Although they later divorced, Kathy and John remained friends, ensuring their children and grandchildren always experienced the joy of celebrating together.
Kathy found the love of her life in Bob Richardson, and they married on January 26, 1991. Their home south of Newton, on an acreage they both adored, became a testament to Bob’s remarkable handyman skills. Kathy often proudly shared that the beauty of their home was all thanks to Bob’s keen eye for detail and impeccable upkeep.
The years were filled with memorable vacations and adventures with friends and family. They also enjoyed a lot of time on Bob’s Harley, whether with family, friends, or just the two of them. Kathy’s life was blessed with many enduring friendships, some lasting over 60 years. One exceptionally cherished friend was Elsie Price, daughter of Jeremy and Tasha Price. Elsie’s declaration of Kathy as her best friend was a sentiment Kathy wholeheartedly reciprocated.
Kathy was renowned for being the life of the party, effortlessly organizing town-wide celebrations for birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, and more. Her unique talent for roasting people at special events brought joy and laughter to countless gatherings.
On July 1st, 2021, Kathy was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS, the rarest form of ALS. She was given a life expectancy of 1-3 years, and to no surprise, she beat that prediction with her upbeat and positive attitude.
Left to honor Kathy’s memory is her loving husband of 34 years, Bob Richardson. Her two children, Ashley (Ed) Martin and Travis (Kristin) Crawford. Her two stepchildren, Curt (Wendy) Richardson and Jim Richardson. Twelve grandchildren, Taylor, Hunter, Seth, Jonny, Elijah, Elliana, Genevieve, Giovanni, Liliela, Zachary, Colton, and Colby. Four great-grandchildren, Pheonix, Wyatt, Marcos, and River. Her siblings, Helen (Dean) Lanser, Ruth (Steve) Bookout, and Kenny Deppe. Those that were there to meet her on the other side were her mom and dad, Maynard and Juanita Deppe, and her very special nephew, Brian Woody.
Kathy’s vibrant spirit and infectious energy will be deeply missed. She leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and unforgettable memories.
