On November 11, 2024 the Kress family lost their hero. Bob had a difficult battle with Diabetes, Parkinsons and then Cancer. Robert (Bob) Kress Jr. was a loving husband, father, papa and friend to all those that knew him. His kind and congenial personality always made everyone feel welcome.
There will be a visitation at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City from 4:00-6:00 pm on November 22, 2024. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Pierce Ave. in Mason City, Iowa at 10:30 am on November 23, 2024 with Pastor Kip Murphy officiating. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Parkinsons Foundation, the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association or the First Presbyterian Church.
Bob was born on May 1,1946 to parents Robert Sr. and Louise Kress in Davenport, Iowa. Two years later his sister, Susan (Sue), was born and he promptly became her protector and confidant. He graduated in 1964 from Davenport Central High School. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1966 where he proudly served his country as an electrician’s mate aboard the USS Coral Sea and the USS Hunterdon County in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged in 1969.
Bob married his best friend, Sarah Green, on October 24, 1970. Bob and Sarah were thrilled to welcome their two daughters, Cheri and Kelly to complete their family. Bob, always being the outdoors man, was proud to introduce his daughters to hunting, fishing and taking care of nature. They were often out the door before dawn looking forward to the day’s adventure. (Well, maybe the girls weren’t too eager until the sun came up and they had time to wake up) Bob continued to share his love of hunting and fishing with his son-in-law, Jay and grandchildren Skye and Shae.
When Bob returned home from the service he began his employment with Northwestern Bell and retired from Century Link after 36 years. He took only 2 sick days during his employment. Bob accepted a management position in 1970 and moved his family from Davenport to Mason City. His work ethic was always one of honesty and dedication.
Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City where he served as a deacon and elder. He was the chair of the Building and Properties committee where his handyman skills were a blessing. He was not afraid of heights and he could often be found on top of a high ladder changing light bulbs in the chandeliers of the tall sanctuary ceiling. This also included to the tip top of the family pine tree for the entire community to enjoy at Christmas. His neighbors often sent cards of thanks for his dedication.
Bob and Sarah spent many happy years of vacations with family members on Lake Ada in Minnesota. Their days were spent enjoying all water sports and relaxing by the lake. Of course, swatting mosquitoes was an ongoing sport. They would close the day by singing around the campfire with Bob playing his guitar.
After retirement, Bob and Sarah were blessed to travel with friends and family going to many warm destinations escaping the cold temps of Mason City. Life long memories and friendships continue.
Those left to cherish Bob’s memories are his wife, Sarah; daughters, Cheri Kress Collins and Kelly (Dr.Jay) Koenen; grandchildren, PFC Skye RP Koenen and Shae Koenen; brother-in-laws, William (Donna) Green and David (Rose) Green; many nieces and nephews; and numerous loving friends.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Louise Kress, sister, Susan Swartz; his grandparents and many aunts and uncles.
The family would like to thank the staff at Good Shepherd Care Center along with St. Croix Hospice for their care and support during Bob’s stay there.
Bob’s life was full of laughter and love and he will be missed by all those who knew him.
