Charles Nicholas Hofer, 93, of Baxter, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at his farm stead. A memorial visitation will be held at Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care, in Baxter, on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Immediately following, his memorial service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Christopher Hayward officiating. A burial will take place at a later date at Bethany Cemetery in Rural Baxter.
Charles was born on April 21, 1931, in Melbourne, Iowa on the Charles Luthi farm to Ernest and Rosa (Luthi) Hofer. He grew up in Collins where he worked on the family farm and graduated from Collins High School with the class of 1949. Following school, he attended community college then joined the Army where he was stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. After honorably serving his country, he returned home and farmed with his family. Charles married the love of his life Janice Willia in State Center on July 2, 1955. The couple farmed, began their family, and eventually moved southeast of Baxter in 1960. He remained on that farm stead where over the years he raised livestock, farmed, and ran a trucking company.
Charles was a member of Bethany Church, NFO for 63 years, Collins American Legion for 67 years, an EAA member, and Township Trustee. He loved to fly and was an avid plane enthusiast. Charles also enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, traveling to Europe, family vacations, watching CNN, and listening to AM radio.
Those left to cherish Charle’s loving memories are his son Jerry (Lorna) Hofer, of Baxter; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many great greatgrandchildren; sister Eileen “Lolly” Hamre; sister-in-law June Hofer; cousins; and many friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janice, daughter Kathy Williams; son Roger Hofer; brother Howard Hofer; and sister Bernice Hofer.
