Sarah Sandquist

Sarah Sandquist went to be with her Lord on October 1, 2024 at the age of 86.

Sarah is survived by her beloved husband Robert “Bob” Sandquist of 64 years and her three children: David (Kerrie McCurdy) Sandquist of Colorado Springs, Shannon (Lisa) Sandquist of Ames, Iowa, and Kristin (Jeff) Guthrie of Decatur, Georgia. She was beloved by her eight grandchildren: Zachary Sandquist, Taylor Sandquist, Emily Marie (Mattias) Gassman, Erik (Kellyn) Sandquist, Naomi (James) Teutschmann, Natalie (Alex) Schaffer, Lily Guthrie, and Miriam Guthrie. She was also delighted by her eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Linda Harding, her infant son Stephen, her parents Carl and Mercedes, and a host of dear friends.

Sarah was born in Lindsborg, Kansas and graduated with a degree in chemistry from Bethany College. She first worked as a medical technologist in Smithville, Missouri, where Bob and Sarah were blessed with three children. In 1970 they moved to Newton, Iowa, where she worked for many years at Skiff Hospital.

Sarah lived a life of service to others and taught her children the love of the Lord. She was very involved in church activities. During retirement, Sarah and Bob became involved with Habitat for Humanity. They spent weeks at a time in their cozy little trailer in different spots around the country building houses for people in need.

Sarah had numerous hobbies and interests, many of which she enjoyed sharing with her family, especially her grandchildren: cooking and baking, playing the piano, reading, sewing, biking, camping, gardening, birding, scrapbooking, playing board games, and eating dark chocolate.

Sarah loved to travel. When they retired, Bob and Sarah traveled the world with her sister and husband and their dear friends Anita and Don Blaker, visiting places like Tanzania, Japan, Australia, China, Sweden, and Indonesia.

In the last few years, Sarah suffered from dementia. She passed away after complications from a fall.

Sarah was beloved by her numerous friends and family. All are invited to her service at First Lutheran Church in Newton, Iowa on Monday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive visitors during the luncheon after the service. If you so desire, memorials can be made to Habitat for Humanity, the organization that she and Bob valued, spending over 20 years hammering, painting, and sanding in service to others.

The memorial service will be livestreamed and a link will be available under the Events Section of Sarah’s obituary on the Adams Funeral Home website. The arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for the family at adamssoderstrum.com.
