Steven Everett Brown, 75, of Newton, died Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at his home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday May 16, 2024, at the funeral home. Memorials to St. Nick’s Christmas Club can be left at the funeral home.
Steve, the son of Lester E. and Doris (Rembold) Brown, was born February 24, 1949, in Ames. He grew up in Stockton and Santa Cruz, California, graduating from Santa Cruz High School in 1967. Steve joined the US Air Force in 1967, serving in the Vietnam War. After his discharge from the military in 1972, he attended Los Angeles City College. In 1976, Steve moved to Des Moines, where he lived until moving to Newton in 1980. Steve worked as a network systems engineer at Wells Fargo for 31 years, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the American Legion Post 111 and played softball in Newton for 20 years. He also enjoyed going to the casino, singing karaoke at the American Legion, and cheering for his beloved Chicago Cubs.
Steve is survived by his daughters, Stacy (Bryan) Freitas of Eugene, OR and Christy (Robert Knighton) Brown of Veneta, OR; his stepson, Bob (Denise) Hummel of Slater; his grandchildren: Stevie Freitas, Zach Maston, Gunnar (Chai) Bucklin, and Chelsea (Trent) Salsman; great-grandchildren, Maverick Salsman and Alayna Barnell; his sisters, Diane Welch and Pam Pellegrino; and his nieces and nephew: Terri Welch, Lori Bettencourt, Shawn Newsom, and Heidi England. He was preceded in death by his parents; partner of 24 years, Judy Nevitt; daughter, Brandi Brown; stepdaughter, Bambi Maston; and his grandson, Tim Reynolds.
