Joseph DeVorss “J.D.” Wood, 95, of Newton died on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Park Centre in Newton. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home and again after the service with a lunch. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Wesley Life Hospice may be left at the funeral home.
J.D., the son of Clarence and Inez (DeVorss) Wood, was born on December 23, 1928 in Trenton, Missouri. He grew up and later graduated from high school in Trenton before moving to Newton, Iowa to take a job at the Maytag Company. J.D. then served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1954. On June 12, 1951, J.D. was united in marriage with Phyllis Snook at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. For many years, J.D. worked as a truck driver. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge, and a past member of the Teamsters. J.D. liked working in his yard, tinkering, and spending time with family during holiday gatherings. He and Phyllis also enjoyed many winters in warmer climates, always ending with time spent in Florida.
J.D. is survived by his children, Joe Wood of Newton, Jim (Mary) Wood of Newton, Randy Wood of Newton, and Carolyn (Guy) Mouton of South Lake, Texas; his grandchildren, Brandi (Chad) Rinehart, Dustin (Jackie) Wood, Jessica (Heath) Miller, Noelle Mouton, Danae Mouton, Schyler Wood, Hannah (Caleb) Wipf, and Sarah (Conner) Reynolds; step-grandchildren, Michael Hoover and Matthew (Amy) Hoover; his 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis Wood; and a brother, James Wood.
