John Matthias, aged 73, of St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away on August 1, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margaret, two children, Cynthia Matthias (Ken Lidle) of Minneapolis, MN, Jonathan Matthias (Cassey Bauer) of Portland, OR, and three siblings, Judy Thayer of Wauwatosa, WI, Nancy Spransy (Dick) of Wauwatosa, WI, Bob Matthias (Louisa), of Boulder, CO, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John had wide-ranging interests that were reflected in his hobbies, his education, and his career. Born in Newton, Iowa, John received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa, a master’s degree from Seton Hall University, and a law degree from the City University of New York. John worked as an attorney early on and later retired from a lengthy career as a court management consultant with the National Center for State Courts. He had lifelong interests in language, philosophy, and classical music, and enjoyed walking, hiking, reading, meeting new people, and spending time with his family. He was known as a kind and gentle man who was always eager to offer a helping hand, a sympathetic ear, or a silly joke to raise one’s spirits. John was able to find joy and meaning in whatever he was doing, and wherever he was.
A memorial service will be held at Marvella, 825 Mount Curve Blvd, St. Paul, MN 55116 on Saturday, August 12 at 1:30 p.m.
