Richard Alan “Dick” Vroom, age 78 of Altoona and formerly of Prairie City, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023 at his home. Private family graveside services will be held at Waveland Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Central Iowa and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The son of Clifford L. and Doris V. (Erskine) Vroom, Dick was born on November 9, 1944 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dick graduated from Pella High School and then attended AIB in Des Moines. On October 4, 1968, he was united in marriage to Lana K. De Vries at the Otley Reformed Church. Dick worked as an accountant for George Hormel Co. following his time at AIB. He and Lana owned and operated D & L Clothing, a men’s clothing store in Prairie City. After selling the store, Dick worked as an accountant for several trucking companies. He worked as a temp for several years including for the state of Iowa during tax season. In addition to working his day jobs, he farmed nights and weekends.

Dick loved to travel and enjoyed taking his family on two-week long road trip vacations every summer as the girls were growing up. He especially loved the mountains and Yellowstone. He and Lana had visited all 50 states and Canada. In 2014, they took their first cruise and continued to do so every year. Dick loved national parks, civil war battlefields, Native American history, WWII and Civil War history, and was a memorabilia buff. Dick collected caps and magnets from every place he and Lana went, had an awesome country music CD collection, enjoyed doing word puzzles but most of all his cats.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Lana; two daughters, Vicki (Chris) Palm and Jodi (Justin) Hulbert and four grandchildren, Ryan and Reese Palm and Emersyn and Sam Hulbert. Preceding Dick in death were his parents.
