Earl Dwight Huggins

Earl Dwight Huggins, 91, of Newton died on Monday, March 27, 2023, at his home at Park Centre. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023, at Newton Union Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 11-12:30 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to Dollars for Scholars may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Dwight, the son of Floyd and Golda “Goldie” (Garmon) Huggins, was born on March 16, 1932 at home in Bloomfield. In junior high, Dwight began dating Mary Jacqueline “Jacquie” Latimer. In 1950, Dwight graduated from Bloomfield High School and then received his B.S. degree in education from Northeast Missouri State University. On July 10, 1953, Dwight and Jacquie were united in marriage in Bloomfield. Dwight served his country in the U.S. Army during Korea from April of 1954 until February of 1956. He later received his M.A. in counseling also from Northeast Missouri State University. Dwight taught History and coached for five years in Bloomfield and then taught Physical Education and coached for three years in Corydon. Following that he moved into counseling and worked at Mid-Prairie High School for four years before beginning his 28-year career in counseling for the Newton Community School District. Dwight was a member of the St Luke United Methodist Church in Newton. He enjoyed puttering in the yard and loved to play golf and spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dwight is survived by his children, Laura (Kurt) Van Zee of Newton and David (Katie) Huggins of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Maggie (Aaron) Riggs, Kylie Van Zee, Benjamin Huggins, and Andrew Huggins; his great-grandchildren, Grant and Hallie Riggs; siblings, Oma Munn, Ron (Pat) Huggins, Harold Huggins, Max (Tonya) Huggins, and Gary Joe (Pam) Huggins; sisters-in-law, Marietta Huggins, Janice Huggins, Sue Myers, and Debbie Huggins; brother-in-law, Rusty Grinstead; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jacquie; brothers, Floyd “Smoke” Huggins, William “Bill” Huggins, Jimmie Huggins, Tom Huggins, and Stan Huggins; sister, Rose Grinstead; sisters-in-law, Marlene Huggins and Betty Anne Huggins; and brother-in-law, Jimmie Munn.
