Dec. 15, 2022

John William Allen, 83, lovingly known to many as “Mr. A” passed away peacefully with his family at his side after a health battle for the past few months.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM, Tuesday at the church with a rosary at 7PM. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Regina Foundation to establish The John and Margaret Allen Scholarship.

John started life on November 19, 1939. His parents Beatrice and George Allen welcomed John and his twin brother James in Des Moines. They would attend and graduate from Dowling High School, both a part of the dance band. During his school days, John finished his scouting experience by becoming an Eagle Scout. Soon after graduation he would work in the toy department for the Younkers stores. He would set up the Christmas displays there, likely his reason for loving the season and wanting to make sure his family had their Christmas in his last days.

John made the decision to attend Conception Seminary, later leaving that path to enter the Army in 1962 where he would have an exceptional career serving 39 years active and in the Reserves. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4th class. His unending patriotism has been shown in his love for our country and respect for our flag. He was honored to have had breakfast with Generals Westmorland and Powell during his career. He was present at the Pentagon the day President Ronald Reagan was shot.

John and Margaret “Margie” met when he stopped by her house to pick up her brother. It wasn’t long before they realized their destiny was together and were married 52 years before Margie’s passing in 2018. Sons Chris, Mark, and Andy completed their family.

John and Margaret moved to Iowa City where “Mr. A” taught at Regina High School for 34 years and continued subbing until 2019. His love for his students was obvious as students continued to reach out with visits, phone calls, and notes after graduation. He cared about helping kids learn but also about their well-being beyond the school walls. He loved the opportunity to accompany students on trips to Rome and was humbled to have had a general audience with several Popes.

John was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Iowa City and after moving to Newton he became a faithful attendee of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. His many closest friends were those that served the church.

John adored his family and found great joy watching and enthusiastically cheering on his grandchildren in their activities. Until recently, he also enjoyed travels that took him to visit family and friends throughout the country.

Those who will honor the memory of John are his sons and their families, Chris (Marcia) Allen of North Liberty, Mark (Emily) Allen of Newton, and Andy (Mary) Allen of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Sean (Claire) Allen of Omaha, Noah, Estella, Henry, Max and Charlie Allen of Newton, and Ezra and Jonah Allen of Cedar Rapids; brother and sister-in-law, Jim (Mary Kay) Allen of Kansas City; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret and his parents. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lensingfuneral.com
