JoAnn Southern, 88, of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Newton, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at home in Colorado Springs. No service is scheduled.
JoAnn, the daughter of John and Marguerite McNew, was born on April 12, 1934, in Iowa City, Iowa.
She is survived by her sister Wanda Childs, of Altoona, Iowa; her sister in-law Betty Dryer, of Newton, Iowa; her four children; Deborah Pherigo, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mark (Judy) Stevens, Pam Davidson, and Mike Stevens of Newton, Iowa. 5 grandchildren, Amy (Rick) Drake, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Matt Davidson, Des Moines, Iowa; Grant Davidson, Pleasant Hill, Iowa; John Stevens, of Sandpoint, Idaho and Jake Stevens of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Jeff Dodd, Newton, Iowa and Amy Milianti, Sarasota, Florida. Her Great grandchildren Breanna (Kelly) Drake and Lilith Drake of Colorado Springs, Jordan Henning of Iowa City, Iowa and Logan Henning of Fort Riley, Kansas Her brother in-laws Jim (Betty) Southern, of Newton, Iowa. Step children Denny (Jodie) Southern of Palm Harbor, Florida and Donna Cook, of Newton, Iowa.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Russell Southern, her parents, her brother Larry McNew, her sister Martha Guthrie, and her Grandsons,Aaron Henning and John Stevens. Her brothers in law Fred (Ruth) Stevens, Darrell Dryer, of Newton, Iowa; sisters in law Colleen (Kenneth) Miller and Patty (Vaughn) Faber, of Blakesburg, Iowa.
She was active in the First Christian Church and the VFW of Newton, Iowa. She was generous with her support of many Military Organizations. JoAnn worked at the Maytag Corporation, Younkers of Newton and Pyramid Plastics.
A special “Thank You” to her Colorado Family; Debbie, Amy, Rick, Breanna, Kelly and Lilith Drake, for spoiling their “Grandma” and taking such good care of her in her Twilight Time.
