Larry Lee Van Winkle, age 79 of Monroe, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at MercyOne in Newton. Memorial services will be held on Friday July 8, 2022 at 10:00 am at the Prairie City Church of the Brethren. Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 7, 2022 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City. The son of James Cloyd and Florence Lowene (Lawrence) Van Winkle, Larry was born on September 26, 1942, in Bagley, Iowa. Larry attended rural school in Fansler and went to high school in Guthrie Center. Larry joined the United States Navy in 1961 and transferred to the reserves in 1963. During his time in the Navy, Larry was a gunner’s mate on the USS Passumpsic. On September 1, 1972, he married Garnet Ann Stoner. After leaving the Navy, he drove a truck. Most recently for Craven Trucking, Farm Service, and the Coop.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Garnet; children, Ricky Van Winkle, Kevin (Kristine) Van Winkle, Lonny (Julie) Van Winkle and Amber (Dan) Nickelson; three grandchildren, Jacob Van Winkle, Trent and Kate Nickelson; four step grandchildren; and 13 step great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Karla Van Winkle, Elaine Hand, Janet Stoner and Janene Stoner; brothers-in-law, Howard (Margaret) Stoner and Al Stoner and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Gary Van Winkle; brothers-in-law, Bill Hand and Donald Stoner and an infant sister.
