Shirley Ann (Manson) Johnson, 93, passed away with family by her side on June 1, 2022 in Newton, Iowa. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 am on June 10, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends after the service with a lunch at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed towards the Iowa River Hospice, 502 Plaza Heights Road, Marshalltown, Iowa 50158.
Shirley was born August 1, 1928 in Le Roy, Kansas to George and Maud Manson (Bartlett). With five siblings Shirley grew up in Le Roy and graduated from Le Roy High School. After a brief time in California, Shirley returned to Kansas and moved to Topeka where she worked as a telephone operator for AT&T and met her future husband, Kenneth Randle Johnson. Shirley and Kenneth were married on July 30 of 1949, welcomed two sons, Kendall Richard and Timothy Bruce, into their family and moved to the Newton area in late 1959 where they lived for most of their years. Shirley worked at the Vernon Company for 20 years and made many life-long friends. Shirley was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and she and Kenneth enjoyed fishing and camping, traveling with friends, sewing quilts and baby blankets, and spending time with their two granddaughters. In recent years Shirley was delighted to welcome the arrival of a great-grandson.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 72 years, Kenneth Johnson, a son, Timothy Johnson, two grandchildren, RaeMarie Davis and Dana Johnson, one great-grandson Aca, and a sister Jane Walker of Le Roy, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Madeline, Sue and Evelyn, one brother Max, and one son, Kendall Richard Johnson.
