Jerry Lee Butler, 83, of Newton, died on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Accura East. Services have taken place at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions towards a memorial bench (checks made payable to Julie McGinley) may be left at the funeral home.
Jerry, the son of Harry and Fern (Berry) Butler, was born on November 11, 1938, in Baxter. He graduated from Baxter High School in 1957. Jerry worked for Maytag as a repair parts specialist and supervisor for 32 years, from 1965 to 1997. On September 17, 1961, Jerry was united in marriage with Janice Clement, and they had three daughters together before Janice’s passing in 1999. On July 2, 2005, Jerry was united in marriage with Carol Van Gorp. Although Jerry was a lifelong resident of Newton, he spent the last 18 winters in Florida with Carol. Jerry was also a member of the Elks for 20 years, the American Legion, and the Ikes. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed farming, golfing, and coaching his daughters in sports. He also had his pilot’s license and made a landing at every airport in Iowa.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Carol Butler of Newton; daughters, Jolene Yeager of Newton, Julie (Terry) McGinley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Jane (Rod) Warnke of Newton; step-children, Rick (Arlene) Dahlem of Florida, Diane (Gordy) Gilman of Wisconsin, and Mike (Terri) Dahlem of Texas; grandchildren, Calvin Waskow of Des Moines and Maddison Berstler of Iowa City; and brother, Burton Butler of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Fern Butler; wife, Janice Butler; siblings, Roger and Jacquelyn Butler; and in-laws, Marvel and Carl Clement.
